SCIENCE AT THE EXTREMES: A CURRENT GLANCE AT THE FIRST CONGRESS OF ANDEAN MAN (1973)

CIENCIA EN LOS EXTREMOS: UNA MIRADA PRESENTE AL PRIMER CONGRESO DEL HOMBRE ANDINO (1973)

We outline the development of Andean Studies in Chile from its earliest beginnings to its professionalization and institutionalization. We identify the orientations of each moment: first, an evolutionary one related to integrating the Norte Grande into the nation State; second, a developmental one associated with the expansion of the academic-scientific fields aimed at national and regional development through reformist and revolutionary processes that the country experienced between 1960 and 1970. We highlight key milestones in the establishment of the academic-scientific fields in northern Chile. Against this backdrop, we illustrate how the First Congress of the Andean Man reflects the emergence of a local community of researchers connected with others across the country and the world. At the same time, it shows the dialogue and efforts to coordinate various institutions around ethno-development, addressing social issues associated with the existence of Andean Indigenous communities of a country in transformation.
